Navy to upgrade disorders torpedoes for subs

The Canada Navy provides approximately spend $ 120 million to modernize 36 torpedoes, but they don't always work in its four submarines without other fairings, CBC News has learned.

The Navy has American MK-48 torpedoes in stock, but the four submarines built for the British are not able to draw their.

Even after the weapons are converted, the Canada would still have to spend millions more to refit submarines to draw.

The plan of the Canada to upgrade the torpedoes was revealed by the cooperation agency security of the American Defense, which oversees the country in sales abroad of arms. The Agency said that material, parts, training and support would cost more than 120 million of $ CDN. It has notified the Congress of the United States on the sale in mid-March.

Since the Canada already has the torpedo, it will have "no difficulty absorbing these additional conversion kits," the Agency said in a release again.

Representatives of the Canadian Defense Ministry have not yet answered the questions of CBC News.

Scott Taylor, Publisher of spirit Corp., a military, said magazine program submarines of the Navy became a national embarrassment expensive.

"It is probably a little more cherry on a cake we probably never would have," he said.

"To upgrade weapons on submarines, which were never really patrolled, with no imminent war - people have got to be questioned, I mean."

The British Royal Navy launched the class Upholder submarines propulsion diesel in the 1980s and retired from service in 1994. Canada purchased four of them in 1998 and their renowned Victoria class.
