In my watch I've seen quite a few meteors, fireballs and bolides the sky time. The truly remarkable are few and far between, but last Saturday, I caught one which was among the most interesting I've seen. It was a slow moving, bright green one with a beautiful smoke trail, which was just as bright as Venus from where I saw it in the suburbs of St. Louis. I tweeted about it briefly, but think a response from someone else who saw it along with a link to a collection of observations about it until I, not much more. The observation for me was so beautiful, it was nothing compared to the view that got some others.
Heading of the American meteor society page for a Meteor looks at this time, it out like a Meteor suitable that I saw a pretty good number of reports from all over the country generated. Several have similar as my initial reactions: this must be a firework display. Many reports confirm the smoke trail and fragmentation as well. But the reports that are are really fantastic to those from Canada.
Most Lunar meteorite Hunter blog have several reports were collected. Some of these reports from various locations in Ontario reports of Meteor is as bright as a full moon and the entire sky light up! One also notes, that she could be a thirsty noise to hear a rare phenomenon occurs as soon as the passage through the atmosphere creates an ionized path the physical vibrations in the air around the viewer have can create radio waves, interacts with the Earth's magnetic field. A further comment reported a sonic boom at the same time (although sonic boom would occur even after the Meteor due to the slow nature of sound waves, was visible as the delay between the lightning and Thunder).
It looks not like NASA's all sky fireball network caught this fireball, but an amateur Observatory equipped with a catch all sky camera for detecting fireballs the event.
The green color for such meteors is unusual but not unprecedented. The presence of magnesium ions is responsible for this color. It is interesting to note that an other famous Meteor the Meteor also had a green tint Peekskill and compete for the full moon in brightness. This Meteor was famous, since it in at least sixteen videos (here is a show the green hue) as damage to survive intact to the ground and a car was recorded independently.
Meteors of this intensity are relatively rare but bright fireballs like this seem peaks around the vernal equinox. In the weeks around this day she such events increases about 10-30%.
