NASA Selects museums in Florida, California, New York and the Smithsonian for the retired space shuttles

Today, NASA Administrator Charles Bolden was the winner in the upcoming bidding be space shuttle orbiter retreat home to one of the NASA. Bolden selected the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, the California Science Center, the Intrepid Sea, air and Space Museum in New York City and the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, outside Washington, D.C.

Bolden did the announcement during a ceremony at the Kennedy Space Center with the 30th anniversary of the first space shuttle flight. Space shuttle Columbia 12 blasted on the Mission of STS-1 April, 1981. Today also the 50th anniversary is the first manned space flight of cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin on April12, 1961.

Only two shuttle flights remain before space shuttle and the orbiter be that after 30 years of Speceflight and retired 133 mission so far. The last two missions,-STS-134 / STS-135 are planned for end of April and the end of June 2011.

The orbiter will then transferred to their new home, and on display in the NASA hopes that they will inspire the next generation of researchers and engineers. But the word of Bolden and the other speakers mentioned was "bitter" - because today a mixture of grief, that the orbiter will be withdrawn, while still flight worthy and happiness that the program has achieved so much.

Atlantis, to fly the final Shuttle, are displayed at the Kennedy Space Center visitor complex. Kennedy is the natural home of the orbiter and where each shuttle mission in life has launched and where each Shuittle Mission for flight is processed.

As expected, was shuttle Discovery of Smithsonian assigned national air
and Space Museum Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Virginia. Discovery is the fisrt of the orbiter be withdrawn and only his last mission STS-133, March 2011

The prototype Orbiter enterprise, which is currently on display at the Smithsonian Institution, are to the East coast of the Intrepid Sea, air & Space Museum in New York City be moved

Space shuttle endeavour go at the California Science Center in Los Angeles, close to the location where all you shuttle orbiter were built. Endeavour will be the only Orbiter display outside the East Coast. Endeavour is for their final flight, mission STS-134, on 29 April start being processed.

The Johnson Space Center is curiously left out all of the Space Shuttle Astronauts and their training facilities.
