Video: Re the first Shuttle flight, 30 years ago

Here film footage from the first space shuttle flight, today is April 1981 on 12 30 years ago. One of the major differences you notice is that NASA to the external tank white draw according to the space shuttle. However, they found that about (1,000 lbs) could save 450 kg with paint. Space shuttle Columbia was also equipped with two ejection seats (that is, why there was only one team of two), but after four flights, NASA decided the ejection seats removed and to go with a "shirt sleeve" environment within the shuttle.

The reasons for the ejection seats or a start of IZS exit are because she could find no way, all seven astronauts to launch when the "normal" amount of crew members on board were, and because it was limited in time, speed and height if the ejection seats would work. The shuttle would have to be travel less than 5470 km/h (3,400 mph or used node) and lower than 130,000 feet (39,624 m). This is a very limited part of the shuttle powered operating envelope, about the first 100 seconds of the ascent of 510 seconds. However, that within the time frame of the shuttle Challenger explosion would.

One of the scenes of STS-1 is my favorite, when astronauts John young and Bob Crippen from the shuttle come after they ended up Edwards Air Force Base on the bounding box. You are so excited and thrilled their perfect test flight. We interviewed Crippen in 2009 and asked him about his thoughts on the shuttle program. Here are some relevant excerpts:

UT: They were the space shuttle at the beginning. What are your thoughts as you now view this program to an end?

Crippen: I feel somewhat nostalgic. It was a part of most of my life. It is a great vehicle and it has done some great things, but I would like to us back to the Moon and beyond, go see and the space shuttle that is not the vehicle for doing. But truthfully, my preference would be to fly it to keep until we another vehicle people bring orbit have been. I'm not that we pause between the shuttle and everything is going to have consequences.

UT: What are some of your favorite memories from your flights to the space shuttle program.

Crippen: I have some great. I like my friend (astronaut) John Young's response to be used: the best part is the part between takeoff and landing. It is all great. All my missions were different, but all of them had some great aspects to them, and I will always have fond memories of it.
